I have an old lamp-base, which I have been told is a "chalk statue". It has sentimental value, however, it has sort of seen better days. I would like to touch-up the paint on it, but have no clue what type of paint to use (or if this can even be done). Suggestions?

First, seal the chalk with Clear Acrylic Spray. Make sure it's Matte and not Glossy. Do about 3 light to medium coats. Let each coat dry before you apply the next. You'll know it's enough when 1) no chalk dust comes off it, and 2) when you lightly tap it with the back side of your finger, where your nail is and you hear a high "plinking" sound.

Then you can use acrylic paints, even if they are thinned down with water for fine detail work and won't have to worry about the water or liquid binder in the paint softening up the chalk.

I've done numerous chalk carved sculptures and this has never failed me.

I'd say something thick like acrylic because it sticks to anything & a thick paint would help prevent the chalk from absorbing the paint. If this doesn't help try this:
