You can use artist's oil paint but it will take a long time to dry.

You can also use "oil-based" house paints, "enamels," etc--those won't take as long.

Generally though, quick-drying and easily-available acrylic paints are used on air-dry clays (sometimes more than one coat is needed, or one coat over a primer) or latex house paint, but really any permanent paint can be used.

If the paint is not permanent (tempera, watercolor), it won't seal the air-dry clay --and sealing is necessary on air-dry clays to protect against later water/humidity-- so you'd have to add a coat of clear permanent finish on top of that paint (or even mix it into a clear finish before painting on).

portray it received't harm it, notwithstanding it may put off the drying time of everywhere that maintains to be moist because it really is now no longer uncovered to the air. The paint may no longer dry on those parts both, because the water interior the paint is re-wetting the clay and the water interior the clay is re-wetting the paint. the different situation you may have is that once clay dries, it shrinks particularly. If it already has paint on it, the paint may crack. With acrylics it truly is a lot less likely than with enamels, notwithstanding it continues to be a chance. putting the clay close to a low warmth source, like a mild bulb (no longer CFL) may hasten the drying.
