There are many different brands of air dry clay. Some you should not fire in a kiln, and others you can. Also, some have a wide range of colors and others do not. Just heating it in an oven or firing in a kiln will not make it shiny. If it can be fired, you can use a glaze made for that type of clay. Check the label for the type you have.
If not firing in a kiln, you can paint with acrylic or tempera paint and when dry use modge podge for a shiny finish. Or there are paint on and spray on varnishes or shellac that can be used instead.
For a more permanent finish, it should be sealed to be water resistant.

Not only could you use a glaze specifically made for air-dry clay, but you could also use acryllic paint. then after the acryllic paint is dry, apply a polymer medium to make it shiny.

You can get a glaze at your local craft store, such as Michael's or Jo-Ann's. It should be in the section with the air dry clay. Or on the Internet, if you prefer.
