i've tried premo and fimo i think fimo is harder to work with and premo does bake very well and i heard sculpey is mushy and too soft and falls apart easily. what's the best brand you've tried?

As mentioned, there is no "best" polymer clay for all people and all situations and all objects/techniques. Also, there are various lines of the brands which may have very different characteristics (e.g., "Fimo" and "Sculpey").

They all "bake very well" but if you're thinking about darkening more easily if not protected in various ways, then definitely Kato Polyclay would be best...it's also one of the top brands for doing everything but the push-pull type of "sculpting" though it is firm, which is part of what makes it good.

The main "Sculpeys" are not the best quality polymer clays, but shouldn't "fall apart" unless you mean that parts fall off if not properly attached** or that they can snap off if projecting or thin which is true.

Check out the info I wrote about the various brands and lines of polymer clay in these questions:

Having just read yet another book on polymer clay projects which has 2-3 pages of information about various polymer clays, you are exactly right and completely wrong - because there is no "best" for everyone. First there are several kinds of Sculpey including original and III and some people that fighting with a firm clay out of the package isn't fun and want a soft clay ready to use. Different skin conditions result in clay sticking or not to the hands and working hot or cold. A firm clay is considered better for murrini cane work while a soft clay mixes colors easier and does bulk forming better and something in the middle helps with fine details, depending on how you put them in.
