One of favorite modern ceramic artists is Toshiko Takaezu. You might also look into the works of Viola Frey, Peter Voulkos, Warren Mackenzie, George Ohr......quite a varied list, considering their styles, but they'd be a good point of departure for you.

Try Ken Edwards. He studied in the US in the 1950's then studied in Japan, then moved to Tonola Mexico in 1960 and set up shop making stoneware plates and pottery. Each piece is stil hand made in natural light and each piece is one of a kind. I believe he is still alive.
