how do i make clay figures? i want to mold figures using clay and then bake them in a oven so they get solid?

i have never used clay before or taken any ceramics classes. Im not sure on the process i would have to do to make clay figures. I want to have these figurines solid so i can paint them and have them look shinny almost glossy! any help would be awsome! thanx!

Have you thought about polymer Clay?

Bakes in your home oven instead of a Kiln.
