You can try www.handbuilding.com - they have an oval box on their project page. You can get step by step instructions with pictures. Hope this helps.

not sure what you mean as template. But you can use a bowl out of your kitchen and line it with a slab of clay. Let dry to leather hard in bowl and the bowl will act as a template. Works with plates too. Though as the size of your new piece will be smaller and the clay can be hard to remove you could make a mold from the outside of a bowl using plaster. The plaster will help the clay drying and you should be able to remove the clay easily. The plaster mold will act as a template for the outside of the bowl and you just will have to deal with the inside.
There are also many plaster molds commercially available for slip casting. If you google ceramic slip casting molds you should find some websites.

Im with the first response, Ive never heard of a hand built template either.
It could depend on the technique you want to use. Slab construction would require a template, but what shape are you looking for? depends on what you want to make, and the shape, and the size etc... Maybe use some basic geometry skills when you decide on the shapes you want??
I found this link that could be a lead for you, but without more specific info about what construction method you wish to use its a bit hard to help.
I did a search and didn't find anything on templates used in hand building. Nor have I ever heard of that before. But here are search pages of links on hand building that maybe of some interest if not help in what you are looking for..
