Try watching within the countrywide Geographic website. In a up to date presentation they showed how it was once built. I cannot explain it in detail, but there have been ramps inside of going up for moving development substances within. There was a approach of pulleys and rollers created from lumber. Determine it out.

If you want to be able to get inside it, and have traps, then you will need to use wood, and lots of it. Look up different types of traps that are from pyramids in egypt. This is going to be expensive and will take a lot of time. If you can't spend more than $100, which you really shouldn't because it is just a school project, then you will need to make it smaller. I would go with solid blocks of wood and make a smaller pyramid that can be placed on a table top. Because it is for school, you should keep with common materials, like wood or cardboard. I wouldn't use sugar cubes, that is just asking for ants.

"something cool and original"

Sorry but documenting a 3000 year old item as really cool and original is going to depend entirely on the details and basically you hare going to have to make a half pyramid and on the slice down the middle put the details like you find in a diagram online.

The best way to build it big enough to show details is to make the big side and the 2 smaller half sides bottom and the vertical of the slice as a hollow box of good cardboard or foam board and then mount the details of the tunnels and traps and drops to the sliced face after making them from balsa wood or poster board.
