Question:
How do I bake polymer clay in my toaster oven?
?

I need to know how long to bake it for and what temperature. What material do I bake it on? Is it dangerous to bake clay in a toaster I bake food in? Also, I heard you should elevate your clay or else it will have a flat side. How should I do that? I don't want to stick a toothpick in my clay, like I heard, and besides, that sounds sorta dangerous...

Thanks :)

Because overheating polymer clay gives off nasty fumes and toaster ovens are notorious for not being precise, it is normally not recommended that you heat it in a toaster oven.

If your toaster oven doesn't have a temperature control you need to use a thermometer in it, like an oven thermometer, then just follow your original directions. You still bake it for the same amount of time. Place it in the middle of the oven. You can use a little metal tray like the kind that comes with the toaster oven or an ovenproof dish. Put your polymer object on a piece of index card type paper and put it on the tray or whatever you're using and bake it that way. It doesn't get hot enough to to burn the paper and you don't get a shiny spot on the bottom of the piece. (you can even work on the card before you bake it.) I haven't heard of ceramic tile being used but it sounds reasonable. You'll probably have to experiment a little... don't expect the first try to be perfect, but you really can't go too wrong with polymer clay, and it's very addicting. I also recommend going to the website listed on the clay package. Which ever brand you use (sculpey, fimo, etc.) has fun ideas on their sites and lots of tips.
