Does Mod-Podge make dishes unsafe?

If you use mod podge to place a decoration on a plate, does that mean that plate is no longer safe to eat off of? No longer dishwasher safe?

It's not necessarily unsafe, but it won't hold very well if exposed to much water since it's not a very strong glue and certainly in a dishwasher. You could at least try just handwashing and being gentle with that area of the plate.



If you're putting the embellishment on the rim area of the plate where it won't really contact food though, you can use a stronger glue like 2-part epoxy glue (the longer the setting time, the stronger), or even Gorilla Glue (if you weight or clamp while setting since it swells).



If you can just decoupage the plate and do that on the *back side if it's a glass plate,* that's done all the time and would be completely safe--though I'd still hand wash and limit the exposure to water:
